The page looked worse after correction.
That was the offence. The clean version had possessed a kind of false innocence. Its margins were calm. Its sentences stood in order. Nothing on the surface confessed hesitation, vanity, laziness, fear, or haste.
Then the marks came.
A line through the sentence that had been enjoying itself. A question beside the image that had arrived too easily. A word circled because it was almost true.




Lovely piece. À road well travelled by most of us! I loved the “false innocence”. The calm margins! And yet, the intrusions in the margins were not always convincing! À word “almost correct” was, perhaps, more fitting! Thank you for the delicacy of the work.
