This essay nearly failed because it was still trying to win an argument after it had discovered a deeper moral question.

The argument was not wrong. That was part of the difficulty. It was clear, forceful, defensible, and morally necessary: no civilisation’s power proves its God; no inherited sacred story entitles one people to stand above another; no truth worth serving requires contempt for the human. But clarity can become a kind of armour. The first versions still carried too much of that armour.

The real work of revision was not to make the essay sharper.

It was to make it less armed.

The turning point came when one sentence stopped behaving like a strong line inside the essay and revealed itself as the essay’s true centre: “The stranger is where inheritance is weighed.” Once that sentence appeared, the whole piece had to be re-understood. It was no longer primarily an argument against civilisational vanity. It was an essay about what inheritance does to the soul when the stranger stands before it.

This piece nearly failed because it understood its argument before it found its object.

The argument was true. Stone survived, and survival changed the way Angkor is seen. Towers remained. Galleries remained. Thresholds, lintels, inscriptions, causeways, devatas, laterite walls, and carved bodies crossed the centuries with an authority softer things could not match. Wood withdrew. Smoke vanished. Cloth disappeared. Palm leaves carrying words returned to dust. The human city receded behind the sacred stone.

But an argument, however true, is not yet an essay.

For a while, The Stone Is Not the World knew what it meant too early. It could say, clearly enough, that endurance has a bias. It could explain that what remains is not the same as what was. It could name the vanished world around the monuments: wood, water, labour, roads, smoke, bodies, weather, devotion.

The danger was that the essay would become a correction placed over Angkor rather than an act of seeing drawn from it.

The revision changed when the essay stopped speaking generally about vanished wood and found the doorway.

A stone frame remains. The wooden leaves are gone. The hard material keeps the shape of something softer, handled, movable, and lost.

That was when the piece finally knew how to see.

This tale nearly failed because it was very easy to make Shiva too visible.

That sounds like an odd danger. The story itself depends on revelation. A god enters the forest as a beggar; the sages misunderstand him; the empty bowl exposes what their discipline has begun to protect. But the more visible the god became, the weaker the tale grew. If Shiva arrived too magnificently, the bowl became a prop. If the recognition was explained too fully, the reader no longer had to feel it. If the miraculous elements became spectacle, the story lost the strange humility at its centre.

The real pressure, then, was not how to make the god wondrous.

It was how to let the bowl remain sovereign.

This poem nearly failed because its subject was too large.

A waterfall offers itself almost too readily to grandeur. It invites every dangerous abstraction: force, surrender, freedom, law, violence, eternity, the smallness of the human being before the world. All of those pressures were present from the beginning. The difficulty was not finding significance. The difficulty was refusing to announce it.

The poem had to stay with one physical event long enough for thought to occur inside the image rather than above it. A river reaches an edge. It goes over. The cliff does not move. The water breaks and gathers and breaks again. That was enough, if the poem could be disciplined enough to trust it.

One phrase in the final revision revealed the danger: “clouded with its own violence.” It was not a bad phrase. That was precisely the problem. It sounded strong, but it was the poem briefly stepping outside itself to name what the image had already made visible. Cutting it allowed the river to carry “sky / in pieces” without commentary.

This essay nearly failed because the parable wanted to console too easily.

That is not a fault in the old story. It is a danger in how such stories now travel. A lost horse returns with more horses. An injury spares a son from war. The pattern is so clean that it almost asks to become reassurance: do not worry; bad things may become good things; life knows what it is doing.

But that version is too kind, and therefore not kind enough.

The real difficulty was to let the farmer remain wise without making him invulnerable, and to let the parable offer steadiness without recruiting suffering into a comforting design. The line that eventually changed the piece was not one of the more lyrical lines. It was the colder one: “Some suffering must be honoured as suffering, not recruited afterwards into a comforting design.”
